Some weeks ago I saw the new troops painted by Lt. Hazel (here) for his fictional 2nd RCW. It didn't take me long to be intrigued by the concept and the small size of the forces required (I am slooooow, you know) to order some Assault Troops at Copplestone Castings. These guys are going to become my Neo-Tsarist/ Russian Orthodox/ Byzantine Empire Reestablishers. After a few tries, I decided to paint them in an Urban Camo pattern. That also took a few tries till I was satisfied. I am still pondering markings for these fellas. A friend suggested painting an Orthodox cross on the back of the helmet of the officer, in similar manner to the markings of WWII US helmets. I actually quite like the idea. The mech that fill follow these troops around will definitely carry more markings and maybe some slogans creating a bit more of a context.
Anyway... here he is:

Very nice painting, the urban camo is great. I like the idea with the cross painted on the helmet.

Thank you for your kind words. :) Glad you like it. Looking forward to getting them on the table against your Neo-Sovs, Jan. My mech has been ordered as well. Went for the Red Block Sierp... Lets see how it turns out.
This looks wonderful. I have been trying to make a decent urban camo scheme for years and you seem to have hit it perfectly.
What colors did you use? What brand of paint? Do you have any more examples?
Thanks a bunch (vielen Dank!)

PS - for helmet markings, we Americans used the four symbols from a deck of cards for companies (I believe) and a vertical or horizontal line in back for different field officers (Lt., Capt.). I believe the GW Cadians have a lot of decals that will fit.
That cross idea sounds great, too. Other symbols could include a lambda or crossed swords.
I've used this company's decals and can vouch for them:
